Bushmills

The area has a long tradition with distillation. According to one story, as far back as 1276, an early settler called Sir Robert Savage of Ards, before defeating the Irish in battle, fortified his troops with “a mighty drop of acqua vitae”. In 1608, a license was granted to Sir Thomas Phillipps by King James I to distill whiskey.

“for the next seaven yeres, within the countie of Coleraine, otherwise called O Cahanes countrey, or within the territorie called Rowte, in Co. Antrim, by himselfe or his servauntes, to make, drawe, and distil such and soe great quantities of aquavite, usquabagh and aqua composita, as he or his assignes shall thinke fitt; and the same to sell, vent, and dispose of to any persons, yeeldinge yerelie the somme 13s 4d…”

The Bushmills Old Distillery Company itself was not established until 1784 by Hugh Anderson. Bushmills suffered many lean years with numerous periods of closure with no record of the distillery being in operation in the official records both in 1802 and in 1822. In 1860 a Belfast spirit merchant named Jame McColgan and Patrick Corrigan bought the distillery in 1880, formed a limited company. In 1885, the original Bushmills buildings were destroyed by fire but the distillery was swiftly rebuilt. In 1890, a steamship owned and operated by the distillery, the S.S. Bushmills, made its maiden voyage across the Atlantic to deliver Bushmills whiskey to America. It called at Philadelphia and New York before heading on to Singapore, Hong Kong, Shanghai and Yokohama.

PORTRUSH HISTORY

Portrush, derived from the Irish “Port Rois,” meaning ‘port of the promontory,’ is a quaint seaside resort town nestled along the north coast of County Antrim, Northern Ireland. It shares its borders with the neighboring resort of Portstewart. The focal point of the historic town, encompassing the railway station, most hotels, eateries, and bars, spans a mile-long peninsula known as Ramore Head. According to the 2021 Census, Portrush had a population of 6,150 residents.

Renowned for its three sandy beaches—West Strand, East Strand, and White Rocks—the town is also famous for the Royal Portrush Golf Club. Notably, this golf club, the sole one outside Great Britain, has hosted The Open Championship in both 1951 and 2019.

Delving into its history, Portrush’s roots can be traced back to the late Irish Mesolithic period, around 4000 BC, evidenced by flint tools discovered in the late 19th century. The strategic location of Portrush, fortified by natural defenses, likely saw its evolution into a permanent settlement during the 12th or 13th century. Historical records indicate the presence of a church on Ramore Head during this time, although no remnants exist today. The promontory once housed two castles, Caisleán an Teenie at the tip of Ramore Head (likely destroyed in the late 16th century) and Portrush Castle, possibly built around the early 17th century during the Plantation of Ulster. Unfortunately, no traces of these castles endure.

Following the mid-17th-century Wars of the Three Kingdoms, Portrush transformed into a modest fishing town. Its fortunes took a turn in the 19th century with the advent of tourism, fueled by the opening of the Ballymena, Ballymoney, Coleraine, and Portrush Junction Railway in 1855. By the early 20th century, Portrush had burgeoned into one of Ireland’s premier resort towns, boasting significant establishments like the Northern Counties Hotel. The town’s zenith was marked by its beaches, the Royal Portrush Golf Club (established in 1888), and the nearby Giant’s Causeway, which drew visitors through the Giant’s Causeway Tramway, one of the world’s longest electrified railways built in 1893.

However, Portrush experienced a decline post-World War II with the rise of international travel. It remained untouched by the Troubles until August 3, 1976, when a series of bombings caused property damage and destruction. Another incident occurred in April 1987 when two Royal Ulster Constabulary officers were shot by the Provisional Irish Republican Army during a foot patrol on Main Street.
